You should always Think Gas Safety when you are Hiring and travelling in a Motorhome or Campervan
Don’t be shy…. Always ask your hire provider:
‘Does my Motorhome/campervan have a full valid landlord Gas Inspection Certificate from a Gas Safe Engineer?’
ANYONE who hires out their motorhome/campervan whether it be a dealer, hire company (large or small) or more importantly friend, they MUST have a valid gas safety certificate. Remember yours, and your family’s safety is paramount.
As well as being certain the vehicle is safe to drive before hiring it out.
With campervans and motorhomes, you also need to be sure that it’s safe to live in. Motorhomes and campervans include cooking and heating equipment, therefore there is always an extra risk to life of fire.
Most motorhomes and campervans especially when wild camping depend fully on gas for their heating and cooking facilities.
Ensure your hired motorhome has had a full landlord gas safe registered inspection, regardless of the age of the motorhome. Not many people know this, but even brand-new motorhomes should be checked prior to hiring to a customer.
Checks to be done:
Does it have a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector on board?
It should always have both as you need something that will alert you to any smoke or gas problems.
Has it been inspected within the last 12 months?
The law states these inspections should be carried out on an annual basis (as with rented home accommodation). If in doubt, the gas safety certificate legally has to be held on board the motorhome or campervan. Ask for sight of it…
The company hiring the motorhome may be liable if something was to happen and they did not have the appropriate checks and insurance in place.
Finally, fire extinguisher and fire blankets should always be readily available.
